We just got a few 8-core workstations, and I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to online only some of the cores, allowing artists to work with half, and rush to utilize the other half at times when full threading isnt needed.

I understand that this can be accomplished by setting a submited job to use a minimum RAM value, but this would require specific foresight by the submitter. Adjusting the host file also seems to be unmanageable.

Is there a way to achieve an adjustable "Online X out of Y processors" behavior?

I thought maybe it would be possible for the 8-core user to submit a "dummy" job to their own machine, which would grab a certain number of cores without doing any real processing, but I'm sure that I'm underestimating what is needed to do this.
