HARDWARE SETUP PROCEDURE ------------------------ o Make sure the blue SIN-8 'RS-422 - RS-232' converter has its red S/P switch set to 'P'. o Plug the PC serial cable into the LOWER DRIVE, and the other end into one of the COM ports on the PC. o Edit the SEEK.DEFS file, and configure the correct setting for the 'comdev' command. If your cable is plugged into COM1, then use 'comdev com1'. o Make sure the short 'chain cable' is connecting the upper drive to the lower drive, eg: _-_ _-_ ___--+ ___ 1 | 2 _-_ | _-_ ___ +---___ 3 4 ..the computer should connect to #3. ..#1 and #4 should be connected together. ..#2 should have the little 'terminate' plugged in. WARNING: Never disconnect motor connector while MAX-420 is powered on. It will destroy the motor drive, and void the warrantee. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION --------------------- 1) Setup the hardware first. 2) Install the seek.exe and seek.defs in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 or whatever directory is appropriate and in the system PATH. Note that seek.defs MUST BE IN THE SAME DIRECTORY as seek.exe. 3) To run the PRO1 motor 5 frames, try: seek 5 0 To run the PRO2 motor 5 frames, try: seek 0 5 To run both motors 5 frames, try: seek 5 5 COMMON PROBLEMS --------------- o 'Access denied' usually means some other program is using the com port. 'Seek' won't work if HyperTerm is running, or if a mouse, tablet, or some other device is using the com port seek is configured to use. o 'seek: seek.defs: No such file or directory' Make sure the 'seek.defs' file is in the *same* directory as the 'seek.exe' program. o The seek program hangs. > Make sure S/P switch on the blue "SIN8 RS-232-RS-422" serial connector is set to 'P' (Party Line) or the software won't work. > Make sure the drive is on, and the RS232 cable is plugged in to the correct COM port on the computer. > Make sure the seek.defs file has the correct 'comdev' setting. NEW MAX-420 SETUP ----------------- ONLY DO THIS IF THE MAX-420 HAS LOST ITS MEMORY, OR IF A NEW MAX-420 HAS BEEN PURCHASED, AND NEEDS TO BE SETUP. Greg already did this to the MAX-420 he sent 11/15/01, but this is for your information. It is described in the MAX-420's online manual. If the MAX-420 looses its memory, or a brand new MAX-420 needs to be configured for the first time, you must configure the drive names 'A' and 'B' to the two motor drives. 1) Put the SIN8 S/P switch to 'S' (this is the only time you would ever do this) 2) Remove the 'chain connector', the short wire that chains the MAX-420's lower drive to the upper drive 4) Run Microsoft's 'HyperTerm' program to connect to the serial port, using these settings: File -> Properties -> Port Settings: Baud: 9600 Data Bits: 8 Parity: None Stop Bits: 1 Flow Control: Hardware 5) Plug the RS422 cable from the computer to the LOWER drive. 6) Turn the controller on, and then type the letter 'A' followed by a space, followed by 'X' and hit ENTER. Then type 'S' and hit ENTER. Then turn off the drive. 7) Plug the RS422 cable from the computer to the UPPER drive. 8) Repeat step #6, then power off. 9) Return the 'chain cable' to it's previous connections. Return the S/P switch to 'P'. 10) Turn on the drive, and run 'seek -Q', the response should be: DRIVE A: OK DRIVE B: OK For more information, see pp.6 and pp.7 in the MAX-420 instruction manual.
