Ha, the polygon police.
OK, in the late 80's I worked at a CG production company called deGraf/Wahrman,
and in those days computers didn't have a lot of memory. We had talented computer
artists who made beautiful models that were waay too complex for the computers
of the time. So someone had the job of being 'polygon police' (I seem to recall
that was Brad deGraf, who possibly even coined the term in a meeting) to "reel in"
the modellers to get the polygon counts down. Then the computers could render
in a reasonable amount of time without crashing or hanging.
We were working on a Flintstone's ride film for Hanna Barbera.
One of my 2D animator friends hooked me up with some xeroxes of production
drawings from the original Flintstone's show. So I drew this up based on
those old drawings with the added commentary, and hung it up for the modeller's
entertainment. Drawn with black prismacolor, one of my favorite drawing tools,
and redrew some original art from early the early Flintstone's show that was
floating around in those days.
Copies of those original xeroxes from the Flintstones show made the rounds of all
the 2D animators, and I think John Krisfaluci has some of those same drawings
archived on his site, IIRC.
